Fast Five with Dr Monica Zen
1. What do you love most about your job?
That it doesn't feel like a job! I love the bond I build with my patients. Seeing an obstetrician and gynaecologist can sometimes be quite confronting or uncomfortable and I often see women at their most vulnerable. I find it extremely fulfilling to be able to make my patients feel comfortable and have trust in me to care for them. It's also a great privilege to share the journey to parenthood and to help bring new life into the world.
2. What job did you want as a kid?
I don't think I ever wanted to have a job as a kid, I was more concerned with whether the canteen had run out of red zooper-doopers
3. What's the bravest thing you've done?
When I was in my early 20's, my husband and I both quit our jobs, withdrew our savings and just travelled… no destination, just kind of ended up in places. We ended up in places we never thought we would ever see and met the most amazing people… we road-tripped through Malaysia, went white-water rafting and caving in Borneo, hitch-hiked in Morocco, attended a village wedding in Yemen, back-packed through Europe and skied the Alps.
4. What is your favourite hobby?
Gym-ing! ... is that a hobby? I really enjoy working out, it’s my 'me time' and find it a great way to de-stress. I love it so much I became a group fitness instructor and teach classes 2-3 times a week. I absolutely love the wonderful women I work out with regularly and have made some wonderful friendships. I also really enjoy spending time with my husband and kids and exploring new places and experiences together.
5. What was the first concert you went to?
That was in the 90's. My cousin took me to see Mariah Carey, and I actually haven't been to a concert since... hmmmm....
